Stresser sites launching multiple attack vectors simultaneously

More than 250 customers of a popular and powerful online attack-for-hire service that was dismantled by authorities in 2018 are expected to face legal action for the damage they caused, according to europol, the european union's law enforcement agency. Aside from offering ddos-for-hire service, the entity behind zullsec has also compromised a website and currently uses it to host malware. Aside from the obvious threat of increased cybercrime, a key danger of widespread access to extremely capable ddos services is the growth of a whole new class of cyber-criminals: numerous attackers who require very little knowledge, preparation and resources to cause a high degree of damage.

Last week we looked at reports from china and israel about a new internet of things” malware strain called reaper” that researchers said infected more than a million organizations by targeting newfound security weaknesses in countless internet routers, security cameras and digital video recorders (dvrs). In 2012, ddos attacks increased by a pretty ridiculous 200 percent , and 35 percent of businesses experienced some kind of disruptive ddos attack.

The u.K.'s national crime booter said webstresser could be rented for as little as $14.99, and that the service allowed people with little or no technical knowledge to launch crippling ddos attacks around the world. Another factor that influences the final price for a ddos attack service is the target and its characteristics. The fbi study involved paying many of the services to attack a target website and then observing whether that booter did what it claimed to be able to do. Prices vary but the lowest tier of attacks typically cost less than $20 (£15).

The danger of widely available botnets, however, runs deeper than their ability to cause grief to private users, or even the financial implications of ddos attacks, no matter how destructive. The experts estimated that the cost to power a ddos attack using a cloud-based botnet of 1,000 desktops is about $7 per hour. There are many services on hacking forums that offer to do that kind of thing for you, but most people would rather be able to do it themselves using a program or a website that sells subscriptions.

Operation power off is part of a broader law enforcement effort to disrupt the burgeoning booter service industry and to weaken demand for such services in december, authorities in the united states filed criminal charges against three men accused of running booter services, and orchestrated a coordinated takedown of 15 different booter sites.
